what is the new black?

This weekend was hectic and I didn't make it to any shows. The main one I was hoping to see was "Free to a Good Home" at GR2 but maybe I'll catch the work later. Yay for art shows for a good cause!

I thought I'd share some designs I did for the last season of Blood is the New Black. You can see some photos of the actual shirts and order them here although I don't think the site says which designs are currently sold out. The next season is looking really great and I'll share those soon.

I'm off to Vancouver, BC for the next 10 days. Though I'm not there for art-related reasons hopefully I'll have something visual to share when I get back. If anyone has suggestions of galleries, restaurants or shopping up there I'd be much obliged!

art shows a plenty 2/10/07

Lisa Congdon at Reform School in Silverlake. Usually I'm quite shy about meeting people but upon spotting Lisa I introudced myself and glad of it because she is quite a lovely person. I'm really liking her work especially the arrangement of this show.

Crossed town to Culver City to see the show at Project. I was also on a mission to say hey to Mike who recently delurked on "Little Drawings." This show was coloaborative work by The Love Bandits and The Love Movement. I never really found out which was which but I felt the love.

And right across the street at Corey Helford was the Charity by Numbers show. How convenient. I believe this was curated by Gary Baseman and of course all the big names were there. Wait are aritsts celebrities now? I thought that idea died in the 80s. It was invite only before 10 but I slipped in right at 10 to get a good look at everything before the crowds piled in. Cool idea for a show. So many of my favorite artists participated.

It's always great to see Audrey (Kawasaki) she's such an amazing talent and sweet sweet lady. I asked her about how she liked working on the charity project and she said it was great but in retrospect she wishes she had been more experimental. Her piece was beautiful but it's cool to hear an artist wanting to expand and experiment.

There is pressure for a professional artist to make work like the work that got them noticed and that sells well. It's both externally and self imposed but it makes it hard to experiment with new things and it can be frustrating. How to deal?

As usual, there are plenty more photos from that night on my flickr page.

But for now I will leave you with this Valentines' love:

show in vegas

I will post about this weekend's galleries later. I got postponed when my pooor mommy broke her wrist on Sunday afternoon. This is also the reason that I probably won't be able to attend this tradeshow and artshow with Mitra in Vegas but there's going to be a lot great work and of course t-shirts. I really love the new line and at some point I'll post about my designs.

bit o' humble

Kukula

Kris Lewis

a few more images at my flickr page.

We were there early but met some interesting people including a talkative British mortgage guy and his partner who was a fascinating older gentleman and apparently an ex-ballerina.

The art was good. Almost controversial? I hear the word "cliche" and "overdone" from time to time around the LA art scene but I can't take for granted good solid technique.

little time for little drawings

This is from the show in Miami via Mitra. My little fish mouth girl is on the lower left next to Travis Millard's piece and next to that is Keren's red porn star piece. Milano's shirt piece is a bit above that.

Recently I've been overflowing with ideas but haven'thad any time to execute them. Frustrating to say the least. I've had to keep my moleskine with me at all times so that I don't loose it (my ideas and my sanity).

Tonight I'll probably try to go to the show at Junc and while I'm on that side of town maybe stop by La Luz de Jesus.

Tomorrow night I'm going to check out the show at Copro Nason.
Kris Lewis kind of blows my mind both technically and conceptually.
There are some other things going on as well so I hope I have enough energy this weekend.
