I'll post again closer to the show but I've been preparing for this since before Ember and I'm really excited about this new work. Please come if you can!

gallery openings = safari

I really love the name of Natalia Fabia's show "Hooker Safari" (at the Corey Helford Gallery). I kinda want to just go around saying it all day pronouncing it "hoo-kah sa-fah-reh!"

(Natalia taking pictures with safari friends)

(some of her paintings made into jewelry)
Hookers, glitter and free drinks. That's what I call a safari.
Meanwhile across the street at Project Gallery:

Nate Frizzell's installation

Eric Otto's installation.
I didn't get a good photo of Scott Belcastro's work but all the installation work was cool.

Do I need a reason again?
La Brea on a Sat. night:

From the Camille Rose Garcia show at the MK Gallery.
It just appeals to me. That's all.

The work of sweet Denise Simon. I have a print of this little guy and I love it so much. I totally have a thing for hummingbirds in the cheesiest most cliche way. I'll post a picture of my print at some point but in the meantime if you'd like to pick up your own visit Denise's Etsy shop.

Yuki Miyazaki! I love it.
*post edit: The last 2 are from the Delerium Tremens show at the Carmichael Gallery

at the end of Friday
I guess it was art insanity weekend in LA. Though I couldn't make most shows I dragged myself through the rain to Silverlake at the end of Friday to catch a couple things.

Ryan Jacob Smith at Reform School

Ben Templesmith at The Secret Headquarters
Fun shows and I could easily drop a lot of cash in either of these fine Silverlake establishments. In fact, I picked up a copy of James Jean's new Process Recess 2 Portfolio at SH which is absolutely beautiful as expected. Can't get over it I tell you.
I'm not at all recovered from work insanity and I think it's going to continue for a while. If things don't get better soon I think I have some decisions to make. Hope it doesn't come to that.

hearting artists

This Friday was Melissa Contreras' show "Sickly Sweet" at Black Market LA on Sawtelle.
I died over the front installation and these sculptural hanging guys.

You can view (and purchase?) work from the show here.

liar liar
So I did go to one art show this weekend:

Deth P. Sun at GR2 on Sawtelle. Nice group of work. Love it or hate it GR has been really important for young contemporary artists, especially asian artists and I can always get behind that. But really I just love going to shows there because it's close enough to walk to and gives me an excuse to hang out on Sawtelle and go to my favorite sushi place Hide.
I have a very sad feeling I will miss Audrey and company's show at Thinkspace on May 11 because of work. Poo is the only word that comes to mind.
If you like any one of the artists it's really going to be a good show as they are so different yet there are definitely parallels among them.
I have not forgotten about my promise to post some of the art I'm working on. It's coming...

Officially

This was my favorite piece from the Sean Cassidy show at New Image. Mmm wood.

The Richard Colman show at MK blew my expectations. Although I don't have a good photo, the ink on paper works were full of awesome. May I please make awesome a noun so that I can use that phrase officially? Can I just adjust the English language to suit my bad grammar? Officially?

planet of the art geeks

This is a piece from Amanda Visell from Copro Nason's opening this weekend. The show was definitely rockabilly themed and it was cute to see all the rockabilly kids come out.
I totally got confused about the time of the Rachel Sumpter show and missed the opening. crap.
Unrelated, I have decided to open an online shop via Etsy (because as we know I don't have enough projects going on). Last night I rather hastily put the shop up but there isn't anything for sale yet. The idea is to make my original work available to more people and in addition I plan on making some more affordable print sets and also sell copies of my zine. This is an experiment of sorts. We'll see how it goes. Any feedback on this idea would be much appreciated.

blitzkrieg flu
So this crazy blitzkrieg flu got me this week resulting in the tardiness of this post about last weekend's galleries. But better late than never so here goes:

Friday night Kitschen Sync show at La Luz De Jesus staring some of the usual suspects and some new names...
With these ginormous group shows it's kind of a lot to wrap your head around. It's like, there are "areas of the gallery" that I'm drawn to instead of specific artists. I hope that's what's intended.

a piece that i liked by Jordan Isip.
Sat. night after going to a friends' show at UCLA I headed to Culver City for the art insanity that is Culver City on a Sat. night these days...

Loved this installation at BLK/MRKT by Ben Tour.
The entire show was very likeable.
Andy Howell at lab101 gallery:

Lots going on this coming weekend I hope I'm up to it...
